Millions of bison once grazed the continent, serving as a major resource for the people who lived here for centuries. As ranching, farming, and mass hunting expanded in the 17-1800's, the bison's natural habitat became increasingly compromised. At the turn of the twentieth century and after decades of near-extermination, fewer than 1,000 bison remained alive.
Through conservation and re-population efforts, there are now around 500,000 bison in North America, including some in Nevada. Very few of these animals, however, are cut from the same genetically-pure, free-ranging cloth of their ancestors. President Obama even signed a bill making the American Bison our official "national mammal!"
In the future, our goal is to become a stage for historians, environmentalists, conservationists, and other groups and organizations who are passionate about the bison and seek to spread knowledge and awareness.
And of course... we organize music-focused get-togethers so people can dance and make new memories on the playa and outside of Black Rock City.
Kindred Spirit is 30-feet of audio-visual stimulation designed to spark conversation about the American Bison's complicated past, present, and future.
11 feet high, 8 feet wide, and mounted to the front of our vehicle. The steel head was custom designed and fabricated by Ian Liljeblad, our dear friend from the Movement of Jah People reggae lion art car.
The core of Kindred Spirit was made with metal by our friends at Metal Inc in Philadelphia. Our upper deck is lined with custom aluminum railings, and sits atop a storage room with intricate detailing and a built-in stairwell. Different shades and lengths of brown fur cover the vehicle’s body, mimicking the look and feel of a true plains bison.
The finely-tuned sound system is elevated between 3 and 11 feet off the ground, creating a top quality music experience for all desert dwellers. The upper deck also features its own sound set-up.
Our first year on the Playa featured a 7 feet high, 21 feet wide audio-responsive 2,400 LED video wall on both sides of the bison. The head is lit up with LED strips, and par cans and UV lights covered the rest of the body and upper deck.
